An Ahmedabad school's basement was unusable during monsoons due to consistent flooding. We transformed it into a protected, climate-controlled learning facility through comprehensive waterproofing and drainage installation.
The school's basement flooded 2-3 meters deep during monsoons. The space had been abandoned for years. Water entered through: basement walls below groundwater level, cracks in foundation, seepage through mortar joints, and inadequate drainage. The school needed this 2000 sq ft space for expanded classrooms but it was unusable and deteriorating.
We implemented: subsurface perimeter drainage around foundation directing groundwater away, internal waterproofing membrane on walls creating capillary breaks and stopping seepage, floor-level sump pump system with backup power for emergency pumping, vapor barrier under new flooring preventing rising damp, and improved surface drainage grading away from building. Multiple redundant systems ensured reliability.
Key challenge: complete work during 3-month summer vacation to avoid disrupting school operations. We coordinated with school administration: installed continuous drainage system in 6 weeks, installed waterproofing membranes and flooring in week 7, conducted testing and systems verification in week 8, leaving 4 weeks safety margin before school reopened.
Given monsoon climate, we installed: automatic sump pump with backup diesel power (survives multi-day outages), water level alarm alerting staff to excessive seepage, manual bypass valve for manual intervention, and cleanout access for maintenance. We trained staff on system operation, maintenance schedule, and emergency procedures.
The basement is now fully usable. Two large classrooms serve 80+ students. Space stays dry even during extreme monsoons (tested during post-project flooding exceeding design expectations). School reports no water problems in 2+ years. The space is bright, climate-controlled, and maintains student comfort. The project created 800+ sq ft of valuable educational space from previously unusable area.
