This case study details how we waterproofed a Vadodara hospital's basement, which was experiencing serious water infiltration affecting patient care areas and critical equipment.
The hospital's basement was adjacent to a municipal water line and experienced constant seepage during monsoons. Water entered through wall cracks and floor joints, damaging equipment, creating mold, and requiring frequent dehumidifier operation. Previous waterproofing attempts (rubber membranes) had failed within 3 years. The hospital needed a solution that could be implemented while maintaining operations and required long-term reliability.
We identified three issues: (1) Structural cracks allowing direct water entry, (2) Hydrostatic pressure from the adjacent water line, and (3) Failed previous waterproofing without proper surface preparation. Standard membrane solutions had failed because underlying structural issues weren't addressed. We designed an integrated solution addressing all factors.
We implemented: (1) Crack injection with polyurethane foam to seal structural cracks, (2) Crystalline waterproofing coating on walls and floors to prevent water penetration at molecular level, (3) Perimeter drain system redirecting water around the basement, (4) Interior sump pump for additional water management. Installation was phased to minimize hospital operations disruption.
After waterproofing completion, the basement remained completely dry even during the following monsoon season with record rainfall. Dehumidifier operation reduced by 95%. Equipment damage ceased. The hospital regained full use of basement storage areas. Follow-up inspections (6 and 12 months) confirmed no new seepage. The hospital extended warranty for 10 years, indicating confidence in the solution.
This project demonstrated the importance of: comprehensive diagnosis before treatment selection, addressing root causes rather than treating symptoms, using appropriate materials for challenging conditions, and thorough project planning for occupied buildings. The crystalline coating combined with crack injection proved superior to previous membrane-only approach.
